FAWM 2018 #3: Raindrops In My Coffee

3. Raindrops In My Coffee

This is a "rescue" song: I wrote it a while back for guitar, but was never happy with how I played the tricky fingerstyle arrangement. As a result, I never recorded or performed it live, so I'm gonna call it "redshirt FAWM eligible." :)

The arrangement here is minimal (bass, 12-8 drums, piano), without the repeat-with-solo I originally envisioned.

Lyrics

Raindrops in my coffee, grey skies overhead.
No one here beside me, just your memory instead.
I can't quite hear your laughter, your face I can't recall.
Raindrops in my coffee, but there's no one here at all.

Rain plinks in my coffee, autumn leaves are on the ground.
They fall without a whisper; they strike without a sound.
The echoes of your laughter have faded in my ears.
Raindrops in my coffee, mingled with my tears.

Springtime bloomed to summer, our friendship into love:
No further from heaven than the birds which soared above.
It seemed we'd have forever to share the love we'd found.
Too soon our time was over, snipped without a sound.

Raindrops cool my coffee, hint of woodsmoke in the air.
The ashes of our summer scatter everywhere.
Remembered warmth of laughter can't thaw this early frost.
Raindrops in my coffee telling me I've lost.
